Devoted fans of the hit period drama Bridgerton were left seething with frustration after a highly anticipated exclusive preview of the show's fourth season was derailed by significant technical problems on Netflix's part.
A Promising Event Derailed by Glitches
The streaming giant had organised a special livestream event for January 14, promising subscribers a first look at the opening episode of Season 4, dubbed 'The Bridgerton Season 4 Premiere Masquerade'. Fans globally had registered in advance for the broadcast, which was scheduled to begin at 5:30 PM GMT. However, the event was hit with technical issues, forcing a delay of approximately one hour and leaving many viewers staring at error messages instead of Regency-era romance.
An email sent to registered attendees read: “Apologies for the technical difficulties… Our sincere apologies for the delay. Please stand by, the Bridgerton Season 4 Premiere Masquerade: A Livestream Event will be live soon on Tudum.com.” For countless fans, the promised content never successfully loaded, turning excitement into exasperation.
Fan Backlash Erupts on Social Media
The widespread disruption prompted an immediate and angry response on platforms like Instagram, where viewers voiced their disappointment. One fan lamented, “Dear Bridgerton, with the ton of the season would have be nice with the technical issue to have a bit more time or a link to watch the first episode for people who waited 1:30hour and coudnt wait more... gutted.”
Another commented directly to the show's accounts, “it never ended up working. basically waited all day, refreshing until it said thanks for attending... you owe us those GIVEAWAYS.” The sentiment was echoed by many who demanded compensation, such as exclusive access to the first episode, for their wasted time. One particularly frustrated viewer stated, “I think it is only fair for those that signed up to receive access to the first episode... You really should drop the first episode due to what happened today.”
Glimmers of Hope: What Did We Learn About Season 4?
Despite the fiasco, some fans managed to access the stream and shared tantalising details on social media platform X. The episode featured the long-awaited first meeting between Benedict Bridgerton (Luke Thompson) and Sophie Baek (Yerin Ha) at a masquerade ball. Enthusiasts praised the “pure fairytale vibes” and noted the intense connection, with one posting, “The way Benedict's eyes never left her, not even for a second.”
The event, broadcast from Paris's Palais Brongniart, also included cast interviews. Luke Thompson teased a subtle “blink-and-you’ll-miss-it Easter egg” involving a tiepin that would bring the story “full-circle.” Meanwhile, Claudia Jessie, who plays Eloise Bridgerton, hinted her character continues to defy societal expectations, having found a “genius idea” to live on her own terms, though its success is uncertain.
Netflix confirmed the eight-episode structure for Season 4, which adapts Julia Quinn's novel ‘An Offer From A Gentleman’. Part 1 launches on January 29 with episodes titled 'The Waltz', 'Time Transfixed', 'The Field Next to the Other Road', and 'An Offer from a Gentleman'. Part 2 follows on February 26, containing 'Yes or No', 'The Passing Winter', 'The Beyond', and 'Dance in the Country'.
