Every year, Britons report hundreds of sightings of unidentified flying objects (UFOs), from flying saucers to strange lights in the sky. Great Britain is considered one of the world's most active UFO hotspots, despite government officials insisting they are not concerned about such reports. However, ufologists argue that the British government's own files tell a different story, particularly after the Ministry of Defence (MoD) released 60,000 UFO files in 2008.
According to British author and researcher Lynn Picknett, the MoD has kept records of military personnel encountering UFOs for over 80 years. One of the most famous incidents occurred at Rendlesham Forest, near RAF Woodbridge in Suffolk, on December 26, 1980. Military personnel detected a strange object on radar, and airmen sent to investigate found an otherworldly object surrounded by light, which rose up and disappeared. The deputy base commander, Lieutenant Colonel Halt, documented the event.
Another notable sighting took place on August 13, 1956, when RAF officers at RAF Bentwaters reported 15 UFOs on radar racing along the coastline. Former MoD UFO investigator Nick Pope says military jets were scrambled, and one object was recorded at speeds of around 4,000 miles per hour—far faster than any aircraft at the time. The objects were seen by pilots and tracked on radar, sometimes flying in formation before converging into a single object.
Ufologists believe the government's lack of interest in UFOs stems from a cover-up initiated during World War II. UFO investigator Dan Zetterstrom claims that Prime Minister Winston Churchill was briefed on UFO encounters and feared mass hysteria, leading to a 50-year secrecy ban on reporting UFOs. Churchill also initiated government-funded projects to study the phenomena.
Civilian research groups have investigated thousands of unexplained incidents, including a series of events in Warminster, England, over a decade. On Christmas Eve 1964, local resident Mildred Head was awakened by a terrifying noise described as thousands of tiles being ripped off and thrown back on. Such accounts continue to fuel public fascination with UFOs in Britain.
