Valve Sets Minimum Performance Standards for Steam Machine Verified Games
Valve Details Steam Machine Verified Game Requirements

Valve has provided detailed specifications outlining how games must perform to earn verified status on its highly anticipated Steam Machine devices, set for launch in 2026. During a presentation at the Game Developers Conference (GDC), the company revealed a slide that clearly defines the baseline requirements for developers seeking verification.

Core Performance Requirements for Verification

To achieve verified status on the Steam Machine, games must be capable of running at a minimum resolution of 1080p and a frame rate of 30 frames per second. This standard ensures a consistent and playable experience across all verified titles, establishing a clear benchmark for both developers and consumers.

Compatibility with Input Devices and Steam Deck

The Steam Machine will also mandate support for the same input devices as the Steam Deck, maintaining continuity between Valve's gaming platforms. Notably, due to the Steam Machine's reported sixfold increase in power compared to the handheld Steam Deck, all games currently verified for the Steam Deck will automatically receive verified status on the Steam Machine. This policy significantly expands the initial library of compatible games, offering users immediate access to a wide range of titles upon release.

Potential for Enhanced Performance

While the 1080p and 30fps requirement sets a minimum threshold, it does not restrict games from operating at higher resolutions and frame rates. Less demanding titles, such as Mewgenics and Slay the Spire, are expected to run smoothly at locked 4K resolutions with high frame rates. In contrast, more graphically intensive games like Cyberpunk may need adjustments to graphics settings to maintain optimal performance.

Upscaling Technology and 4K Aspirations

Valve has previously indicated that the Steam Machine should be capable of running most games at 4K and 60fps. However, achieving this performance with more demanding titles will likely require the use of FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR) technology. The 1080p minimum requirement aligns well with upscaling methods; when FSR is set to performance mode, it internally renders games near 1080p before scaling up to higher resolutions.

This approach means that most games, by meeting the 1080p baseline, should be able to scale effectively to 4K using FSR or alternative upscaling techniques, ensuring visual quality without compromising performance.

Launch Timeline and Industry Context

Valve initially targeted an early 2026 release for the Steam Machine but has since adjusted this to the first half of 2026. This delay is attributed to the ongoing DRAM crisis, which has caused substantial price increases for key computer components in recent months. The same supply chain issues have impacted other major console manufacturers, with Sony's PlayStation 6 now anticipated no earlier than 2028 or 2029, and Nintendo potentially considering price adjustments for the Switch 2 later this year.

Despite these challenges, early indications suggest that games will perform favourably on the Steam Machine, leveraging its enhanced hardware capabilities to deliver a robust gaming experience. As the launch approaches, Valve's clear verification standards aim to provide transparency and reliability for both developers and gamers alike.
