In a remarkable act of compassion, video game giant Rockstar Games has granted a terminally ill fan the chance to play the highly-anticipated Grand Theft Auto VI nearly a year before its official launch.
A Heartfelt Plea on LinkedIn
The story began in December when Ubisoft developer Anthony Armstrong made a public appeal on LinkedIn. He asked his professional network for help in fulfilling a final wish for a family member, who had been given just six to 12 months to live.
Armstrong explained that his relative was a huge GTA fan and, with the latest prognosis, might not survive to see the game's release. "Best case scenario he will be leaving us the same month it does," he wrote in the since-deleted post. His hope was that someone could arrange an exclusive playtest.
Rockstar's Compassionate Response
Several weeks later, Armstrong shared a positive but cryptic update: "We spoke to them today and got great news. That’s all I can really say, but thank you all from the bottom of my heart." While no official statement has been released by Rockstar, it is widely understood that the company agreed to provide early access to the game.
This gesture means the fan will experience GTA 6 roughly 10 months ahead of its scheduled global release date of 19 November 2026. The game was originally slated for 2025 but faced development delays.
A History of Kindness from the Developer
This is not the first time Rockstar Games has shown such empathy. In a notable 2018 case, the developer allowed a man suffering from neurofibromatosis type 2 to play Red Dead Redemption 2 several weeks early.
On that occasion, two Rockstar employees visited the man's home with a private demo of the Western-themed adventure, letting him play for several hours. This precedent highlights a consistent, if quiet, policy of fulfilling similar poignant requests.
The first trailer for GTA VI was itself released ahead of schedule in December 2023 after footage was leaked online, building immense hype for what is expected to be one of the biggest entertainment launches of the decade.
While the gaming community eagerly counts down to November 2026, this story serves as a powerful reminder of the human impact video games can have, transcending their status as mere products to become cherished experiences.
