In the realm of Lord of the Rings video games, titles beyond the acclaimed Shadow of Mordor series have become increasingly rare. However, fresh data hints at a potential revival for a beloved cult-classic from 2011, sparking excitement among fans.
Rediscovering a Northern Adventure
Lord of the Rings: War in the North originally launched in 2011 for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC. Set concurrently with the events of J.R.R. Tolkien's iconic books, the game transported players to the far northern regions of Middle-earth. It offered an action-RPG experience with hack-and-slash combat, allowing gamers to choose from three distinct character classes: an elf, dwarf, or ranger.
The title captured the fantasy of embodying a trio reminiscent of Aragorn, Legolas, and Gimli, striving to influence the war against Sauron while maintaining a slight distance from the main narrative of the books. A major highlight was its co-operative gameplay, enabling up to three players to team up online and journey through the campaign together.
Commercial and Critical Reception
Despite its promising concept, War in the North struggled to make a significant impact. It received mixed reviews, currently holding a 61% score on Metacritic, and is no longer available for purchase on Steam. This lacklustre performance left many wondering if the game would fade into obscurity.
New Evidence Points to a Comeback
Recent findings on SteamDB have ignited speculation about a possible remaster. A Reddit user noticed that the Steam metadata for War in the North has been altered, with the name changed to 'Sinky'—potentially an internal codeword for a new project.
Further investigation into the SteamDB data reveals that files are being saved to a folder structure containing the name 'Aspyr'. This development studio is renowned for its work on remaster and remake projects, including recent efforts on the Legacy of Kain remasters, Tomb Raider remasters, and the Star Wars Battlefront collection for Nintendo Switch.
Aspyr is currently focused on the Deus Ex remaster, slated for a 2026 release. Its subsequent project remains undisclosed, leading to conjecture that War in the North could be next in line.
Why This Remaster Makes Sense
At first glance, a remaster of War in the North might seem an unconventional choice, as it is not the most critically acclaimed Lord of the Rings title in Warner Bros' archive—games like Conquest from 2009 have historically garnered more favour. However, the co-operative nature of War in the North aligns well with today's appetite for online social gaming experiences, giving it appealing qualities that could justify a modern revival.
Reddit users have expressed keen interest in a remaster, particularly since the game is no longer accessible on Steam. One enthusiast commented, "I would actually love a remaster of that game tbh." Another added, "Hoping this is true, as this may encourage The Battle of Middle-earth, Conquest, and The Third Age to be released." A third shared nostalgic memories: "Let's go! Hoping it's true! I remember playing it couch co-op splitscreen with my brother, 2 controllers on the PS3, we enjoyed it! A re-release of War in the North is most welcome. 3rd person with melee action, range options and co-op, it was one of a kind back in the day."
Official Confirmation Awaited
As of now, neither Warner Bros nor Aspyr have made any official announcements regarding a remaster of Lord of the Rings: War in the North. Fans will need to stay tuned for further updates, but the emerging evidence offers a glimmer of hope for this forgotten gem's return to the gaming world.
