Nintendo has unleashed a wave of creative freedom for island designers with the latest major update for Animal Crossing: New Horizons. The version 3.0 update, which went live on 15 January 2026, introduces a brand-new feature called Slumber Islands, offering players a sandbox-style playground to build to their heart's content.
How to Gain Access to Slumber Islands
Before you can start sculpting your perfect paradise, there are a couple of essential steps to complete. First and foremost, you must have an active Nintendo Switch Online membership. This is required even though the mode can be enjoyed solo, as the islands are hosted online.
Next, you need to have previously visited the dream world by sleeping in your bed and speaking with the tapir, Luna, at least once. After this initial encounter, check your in-game mailbox. Luna will send you a special letter inviting you to explore the Slumber Islands.
With the invitation in hand, simply approach your bed again and select the new "It's slumber time" option. You'll then be whisked away to your personal creative hub.
What You Can Do in Creative Mode
Upon arrival, Luna will present you with the tools to create. You can craft up to three different Slumber Islands simultaneously, choosing from small, medium, or large sizes with varying river layouts.
This mode functions as a creative mode for Animal Crossing, removing many of the standard game's restrictions. If you've ever discovered an item in your main island's world, you can place and duplicate it endlessly here. The full suite of terraforming tools is available, allowing you to construct cliffs, waterways, ramps, and paths without resource costs.
You also have complete control over your environment. By pressing left on the D-Pad, you can adjust the time of day and weather to suit your aesthetic vision.
Important Limitations to Consider
While the creative possibilities are vast, there are key limitations. Most crucially, any items you pick up on a Slumber Island cannot be taken back to your main island. These worlds are for experimentation and design only.
Furthermore, a persistent internet connection is mandatory to access these islands, as they are stored on Nintendo's servers. Despite these boundaries, Slumber Islands represent a significant new outlet for player creativity, letting imaginations run wild in the beloved life simulation game.
