Fire Stick Users Alerted to New Scam Ahead of Tyson Fury Fight
Boxing enthusiasts who utilise Amazon Fire Sticks to watch fights have received an urgent warning about a new scam involving counterfeit versions of the Downloader application. This alert emerges just before a packed weekend of sports, headlined by Tyson Fury's highly anticipated bout against Arslanbek Makhmudov in London.
Exclusive Netflix Streaming and Fire Stick Connectivity
The Fury versus Makhmudov clash will be streamed exclusively on Netflix within the United Kingdom. Amazon Fire Stick users can connect their Netflix accounts to their devices and, if subscribed, view the fight live. However, concerns have arisen regarding the Downloader app, which facilitates file downloads onto Fire Sticks.
Recently, the legitimate Downloader app became temporarily inaccessible from the Amazon Appstore, where it was previously available for free download. Although its removal was only brief, this situation has created an opportunity for scammers to exploit the confusion among users.
Creator Issues Direct Warning Against Fraudulent App
Elias Saba, the creator of Downloader, issued a stark warning on his AFTV News website on March 28. He explicitly advised users: "Do NOT install the app named 'Downloader for Fire, Browser…'". Saba emphasised that this application is a scam designed to trick individuals into paying $6.99 per week. He urged the public to help remove it by reporting it as fraudulent to Amazon.
By the end of March, Saba provided an update, confirming that he had implemented changes allowing a new version of his app to return to the Amazon Appstore. He noted that version 2.0.2 is identical to the previously suspended version, except it does not register as a browser due to Amazon's restrictions on third-party browsers.
Saba also highlighted that the Downloader app in the Google Play Store continues to function as a browser, as Google does not impose the same limitations. He strongly recommended that users who sideloaded Downloader from other sources during its unavailability should uninstall it and install the official version from the Amazon Appstore to ensure they receive future updates.
Tyson Fury's Return and Ticket Sales Confidence
This fight marks Tyson Fury's return to the boxing ring after more than a year out of action. His last match was in December 2024, where he suffered the second defeat of his career against Oleksandr Usyk in Riyadh. Ahead of the upcoming bout, Fury addressed concerns about ticket sales for the event at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
The 37-year-old boxer told Good Morning Britain that while ticket sales may not have been as rapid as some previous fights, he remains confident. "The 'Gypsy King' always sells out," Fury stated, predicting a full capacity crowd of over 60,000 on the night. He acknowledged a busy period for boxing globally but assured fans of a packed stadium.
Fury's opponent, Arslanbek Makhmudov, is a Russian heavyweight looking to make a significant impact in London. The exclusive Netflix streaming arrangement underscores the evolving landscape of sports broadcasting, making vigilance against scams like the fraudulent Downloader app crucial for fans eager to watch the action.
