EA Makes Redundancies in Battlefield 6 Team Following Historic Launch

Electronic Arts has implemented layoffs within the development team responsible for Battlefield 6, despite the title being one of the publisher's best-selling games of 2025. This move comes just months after the game achieved record-breaking sales, raising questions about the franchise's future direction.

Studios Affected and Company Statement

According to reports from IGN, EA has made redundancies at all four studios involved in bringing Battlefield 6 to market:

  • Criterion
  • Motive Studios

The exact number of positions eliminated remains unclear. In a statement provided to IGN, EA explained: “We’ve made select changes within our Battlefield organization to better align our teams around what matters most to our community. Battlefield remains one of our biggest priorities, and we’re continuing to invest in the franchise, guided by player feedback and insights from Battlefield Labs.”

Record Sales and Player Decline

Battlefield 6 launched with tremendous commercial success, selling over 7 million copies within its first three days. This made it the best-selling entry in the Battlefield series' history. On Steam, the game attracted a peak of 747,440 concurrent players around launch.

However, the player base has since experienced a significant decline. Current Steam data shows Battlefield 6 maintaining around 50,000 peak concurrent players, representing a loss of over 90% from its launch figures. The game currently sits at number 48 on the Steam Charts, though additional players on Xbox and PlayStation consoles are not reflected in these statistics.

Criticism and Content Challenges

Despite initial excitement for Battlefield 6 as a pseudo-sequel to Battlefield 3 and 4, the title faced criticism from fans for its live-service approach. The free-to-play REDSEC battle royale mode failed to gain meaningful traction, earning a 'Mostly Negative' review score on Steam.

Content delivery has also presented challenges. The game's second season was delayed by one month from January to February, and although a content roadmap for the next three months is available, Battlefield 6 remains relatively thin on new maps compared to previous series entries. One more infantry-only map is scheduled for late March, with a remake of Battlefield 4's Golmud Railway planned for later in the year.

Future Uncertain in Competitive Live-Service Market

While EA maintains that Battlefield remains a priority, the franchise faces stiff competition in the live-service gaming space. Titles like Overwatch, ARC Raiders, and Apex Legends continue to thrive, making Battlefield 6's path forward uncertain despite its initial sales success.
