Woman Frustrated by Name Cassandra Blocked as Offensive Online
Woman's Name Cassandra Blocked as Offensive Online

A woman has expressed frustration over her name being repeatedly blocked by online platforms due to profanity filters. Cassandra, whose name includes a swear word in its second to fourth letters, said she cannot use her name or its variations like Cassie or Cass as usernames on many websites.

Cassandra's Online Struggles

In a social media post, Cassandra explained: "I have an 'inappropriate' name. My name is Cassandra. A lot of the time, when a website asks for a username or nickname, I can't use it because it contains 'characters that are not allowed'. I can't use any variations either (like Cassie or Cass)." She has had to create accounts with different usernames, leading to confusion and making it harder for others to find her.

The Scunthorpe Problem

Cassandra is not alone. Many others have reported similar issues, known as the "Scunthorpe Problem," named after the English town whose name contains a substring that triggers filters. One Reddit user, a software developer, said they managed to get a firewall system modified after complaining that it blocked searches containing "class." Another user pointed out that the Austrian village F***ing (now Fugging) changed its name due to sign theft and unwanted attention from people taking photos.

Criticism of Outdated Filters

A commenter noted: "It's 2026 and this has been a problem since the '90s or the '00s. We have the technology - surely companies can come up with a list of exceptions that don't trigger the swear filters. Then again, that would take time and effort... and that costs money that could be going to the shareholders." Another user simply said: "Congratulations, you've discovered the Scunthorpe Problem."
