Spotify's disco ball logo has sparked a new trend online, which users are calling 'discomorphism'. The logo was released to celebrate Spotify's 20th anniversary and features a green, glittering disco ball.
The change did not go down well with many users, including one who called it the 'biggest downgrade in history'. However, others were so inspired that they have created a new Discomorphism app. The app, developed by Lovable, uses AI to give the disco ball treatment to any logo. 'Make your logo dance. Drop your brand mark. We coat it in mirror tiles, hit it with the disco lights, and hand you back a one-of-a-kind app icon,' the developers explained.
Delighted fans have flocked to X (formerly Twitter) with their creations. One posted a screenshot of the glittery apps on their iPhone's home screen, joking: 'the era of discomorphism has arrived.' Another user revealed how they had discofied multiple app logos on their iPhone, including X, Slack, and Notion. One user replied: 'this would heal 14 year old me instantly.' Another added: 'Liquid Glass is cancelled. Discomorphism is upon us.' And one joked: 'party all the time in the home screen.'
Unfortunately, Spotify – the app that started the trend – has confirmed that the disco ball logo is only temporary. After it was released last week, several users complained that the mirrored panels made the app look like it was loading. Taking to X, one user explained: 'This is one of those design / marketing moments where I just scratch my head. There are huge readability & brand issues. Different color green – The green is too dark against the black – disco ball texture looks pixelated on a tiny phone screen.' He added: 'A kinda dumb mistake.' Another said: 'I didn't know it was a disco ball the entire time after the update!!! From the Home Screen it looked like a shield or something!!!' And one added: 'I thought it was stuck in that weird state of installing an update but not quite ready to launch yet.'
Following the backlash, Spotify confirmed that it will soon return to the basic lime green logo. It replied to one disgruntled user on X: 'Alright, we know glitter is not for everyone. Our temp glow up ends soon. Your regularly scheduled Spotify icon returns next week.'
To try the Discomorphism app yourself, visit https://discomorphism.lovable.app/ on your phone or computer. Drop a photo of your logo into the dotted box, and then click 'Discofy it'. Within seconds, the app will work its magic, turning the standard logo into a disco ball version.
