Millions of Instagram users across the globe were abruptly logged out and unable to access the platform on Tuesday evening, in a widespread service failure that sparked a frenzy of complaints on competing social networks.
The outage, which began around 10 PM GMT, affected users in the United Kingdom, United States, and Europe. Thousands reported being suddenly booted from their accounts, with many encountering persistent login errors and feed-refresh failures when trying to regain access.
Downdetector, the online service that monitors web outages, recorded a massive spike in reports, with over 250,000 incidents logged from frustrated users at the peak of the disruption.
Social Media Meltdown on X
With their primary platform inaccessible, legions of users flocked to X, formerly known as Twitter, to voice their grievances. The phrase 'Instagram down' quickly rocketed to the top of the platform's trending lists worldwide as confused and annoyed subscribers sought answers and camaraderie.
"Well, if you're reading this, we all know why you're here #InstagramDown," wrote one typical user, capturing the shared experience of the online community.
Meta's Acknowledgment and Response
Meta, Instagram's parent company, acknowledged the issue but remained tight-lipped about the specific cause of the global blackout. A spokesperson for the tech giant stated they were "aware people are having trouble accessing Instagram" and were working urgently to resolve the problem.
Notably, other Meta-owned platforms, including Facebook and WhatsApp, appeared to remain online and functional during the incident, pointing to an issue specific to Instagram's infrastructure.
