Premier League Announces Four Key Rule Changes for 2026-27

The Premier League has confirmed that four key rule changes will come into effect from the start of the 2026-27 season, impacting clubs including Everton and Liverpool. The English top flight announced the updates, which will be implemented when the new campaign begins in August.

Injury Rule Change

Players who receive on-field treatment or assessment must now leave the field for a minimum of 60 seconds, doubled from the previous 30-second period.

Restart Rule Change

Throw-ins and goal kicks will face a five-second countdown. If the time limit is exceeded, the opposing team is awarded the throw-in or a corner for goal kicks.

Substitution Rule Change

Substituted players have a 10-second time limit to leave the field. If exceeded, the substitute cannot enter until the first stoppage after one minute has elapsed following the restart.

VAR Review Change

A VAR review will now exist when a second yellow card is awarded, leading to a red card. This applies only when the referee shows a second yellow, not a potential second yellow.

The Premier League will not adopt optional laws like VAR reviewing incorrectly awarded corners. All changes take effect from the 2026-27 season, with fixtures released on June 19.
