Ford Kuga Named Ideal Crossover for Drivers Over 70
Ford Kuga Ideal for Drivers Over 70, Experts Say

The Ford Kuga has been highlighted as an ideal car for motorists over the age of 70, offering a combination of visibility, comfort, and practicality that suits older drivers.

With a wide range of vehicles on the market, pensioners may find it difficult to choose the right car. For older drivers, the two most important factors are a clear view of the road ahead and a comfortable ride. Popular choices for this age group include the Honda Jazz, Toyota Yaris, and Dacia Duster, but these models are relatively small.

Why a Crossover Suits Older Drivers

For those in their 70s with a larger budget, a crossover could be the best option. These vehicles naturally have higher seating positions, which gives drivers improved visibility of the road. Age UK has recommended models such as the Range Rover and Volkswagen Tiguan, but also highlighted the Ford Kuga as a strong contender.

Age UK said: "Unfortunately, our eyesight and our reactions tend to deteriorate as we get older. For those with slightly reduced eyesight, you could consider a car that maximises your visibility… Quick-clear windscreens and larger mirrors are great features for visibility, and a higher driving position may also prove beneficial."

Comfort and Safety Features

The Ford Kuga offers higher ground clearance and a more elevated seating position, which not only improves visibility but also makes it easier for pensioners to get in and out of the car. Ford models from the ST-Line upwards come with 12-way power-adjustable seats, providing extra support for the back and joints.

The Kuga holds a 5-star safety rating from Euro NCAP, with features such as Autonomous Emergency Braking and lane-keeping assistance. Higher trim models also include rearview cameras and Active Park Assist, adding an extra layer of safety. Older Kuga models can be bought for a few thousand pounds, while newer versions from the last few years are still priced above £10,000.

Space, Warranty, and Efficiency

As a crossover, the Kuga offers ample space, ideal for family weekends away. The boot provides around 475 litres of capacity, expandable to over 1,500 litres with the rear seats folded down. Ford provides a standard 3-year or 60,000-mile warranty on new cars, with Plug-In Hybrid models receiving an extended 8-year or 100,000-mile battery cover.

The Plug-In Hybrid version is also known for fuel efficiency, combining a petrol engine with up to 43 miles of pure electric driving, achieving over 80 miles per gallon.
