DIY SOS 'Axed by BBC' as Nick Knowles 'Devastated'

The BBC has decided to rest the iconic property show DIY SOS in 2027, with a new spin-off commissioned instead, leaving presenter Nick Knowles reportedly devastated.

The programme has been on air for 27 years and has had a tremendous effect on families across the UK, even building a £1million children’s cancer unit in just 12 days. Just this week, viewers were in tears along with presenter Nick as he managed to get 16-year-old Dan home from hospital after three years with a house transformation to make it accessible enough for his complex disabilities.

Sources Claim Show Has Been Axed

According to sources who spoke to The Sun, it’s the end of an era. A source claimed to the publication: “It’s a disgusting outrage.”

“It feels like [the BBC is] too spineless to say what we all know – DIY SOS has been axed. We were told it was being paused, but when we asked whether it would come back in 2028 or 2029 they couldn’t give us an answer.”

The BBC confirmed that DIY SOS is being “rested” due to “savings challenges”, and no Big Build will go ahead for Children in Need this year.

Show Seen as Too Expensive

A source added that the show, which “helps some of the neediest people in our country,” is seen as “too expensive” to run. They added that it is an affront to the “working class”, including the tradespeople who offer their time free to help those in need.

The BBC said in a statement: “In light of savings challenges we have taken the decision to rest DIY SOS in 2027 and commission a new spin-off show instead from producers South Shore.”

“DIY SOS Rebuilt My Life (working title) will revisit successes from the show’s past and expand the brand on the BBC in a more cost-effective way next year.”

Historic Moments and Reactions

Princes William and Harry famously appeared on DIY SOS in 2015, helping to transform a derelict street in Manchester into homes for military veterans. It also joined forces with Great Ormond Street Hospital to build a prize-winning garden on its roof for children to enjoy.

After the Grenfell fire, the team helped to construct two new buildings for the local community, including the Dale Youth Boxing Club’s new home.

According to staffers who spoke to The Sun, the BBC has “made it clear they don’t know” if the programme will ever come back. They said: “This is the end of DIY SOS as we know it and it is so upsetting.”

Nick Knowles is said to have been told of the decision this week, and has been left “devastated”, with “tears being shed by all”. Express.co.uk has contacted the BBC for comment.
