Yakuza Kiwami 3 & Dark Ties: An 'Extreme' Remake That Feels Like a New Game
Yakuza Kiwami 3: An 'Extreme' Remake Detailed

RGG Studio is poised to redefine the concept of a video game remake with its upcoming release, Yakuza Kiwami 3 & Dark Ties. Following a substantial hands-on preview, it's evident this package transcends a simple graphical upgrade, introducing a wealth of new mechanics and an entire standalone prequel story that veteran fans of the series will relish.

A Revitalised Okinawa and New Orphanage Life

The preview session placed players at the sunny outset of Yakuza Kiwami 3 in Okinawa. While the Kiwami series is known for overhauling the classic PS2 and PS3 titles, this iteration goes significantly further. The intention is not a beat-for-beat recreation but a refreshed perspective on protagonist Kazuma Kiryu's attempt at a peaceful life running the Morning Glory orphanage.

This slower lifestyle is immediately emphasised through a barrage of new mini-games and tasks at the orphanage. A new 'Daddy Rank' mechanic sees Kiryu helping his adopted children with schoolwork and quizzes, gradually evolving his role from guardian to a true father figure. Among the new activities, a surprisingly engaging sewing mini-game stood out, described by the previewer as a novel form of racing game requiring precision and timing.

Farming in the orphanage garden also plays a deeper role, integrating with the series' cooking systems. Overall, the Morning Glory segments have been expanded into an in-depth part of the experience, adding meaningful context to Kiryu's motivations.

Combat Evolution and Baddie Battles

Beyond the homestead, the open-world beat-'em-up action returns with vigour. Okinawa is rendered beautifully in RGG Studio's modern engine, explorable by day and night. While switching between Kiryu's classic Dragon of Dojima style and the weapon-based Ryuku style remains fluid, a major new addition is the 'Baddie Battles' system.

This mechanic is inspired by the crew recruitment from Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii. Early in the story, Kiryu becomes entangled in a biker gang war, gaining the ability to recruit and strengthen new members found throughout Okinawa. Managing and customising this gang presents a fresh strategic layer, though the preview noted that the actual bike combat sections remained untested.

The Dark Ties Prequel: A Grittier Counterpoint

The second part of this substantial package is Dark Ties, a standalone prequel focusing on Yakuza 3's enigmatic antagonist, Yoshitaka Mine. This narrative appears to be a straighter, grittier crime story, primarily set in the familiar district of Kamurocho, charting Mine's descent into the criminal underworld.

Its key distinguishing feature is a series of underground fight clubs. Mine can participate in two modes: Brawler Hell, involving one-on-one ranked fights, and Survival Hell, which tasks players with navigating labyrinthine areas, unlocking chests, and defeating enemies against the clock. While promising, questions remain about the mode's long-term variety and the overall scope of the Dark Ties experience, which is bundled with the main Kiwami 3 remake.

Yakuza Kiwami 3 & Dark Ties is scheduled to launch on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC, and Nintendo Switch 2 on February 11, 2026. This dual offering promises to be a generous and transformative revisit to a classic chapter, with Kiwami 3 itself shaping up to be a comprehensive reimagining that justifies the long wait for its modernisation.
