Amazon's New World: Aeternum MMO to Shut Down in 2027
Amazon's New World MMO Server Shutdown Date Set

Amazon Games has announced the impending closure of its flagship massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMO), New World: Aeternum. The servers for the ambitious title will be permanently taken offline on 31 January 2027, marking the end of its run after approximately six years.

The Final Curtain Call for Aeternum

The publisher confirmed the decision this week, following its earlier announcement that no new content would be developed after Season 10: Nighthaven concluded in October 2025. The game was officially delisted from all storefronts on 15 January 2026, meaning it is no longer available for new purchases. Only players who already own the game will be able to access the servers during this final year.

Amazon has stated that the final season will continue to run right up until the shutdown date. However, a significant milestone comes on 20 July 2026, when all in-game microtransactions and purchases will be disabled. The developers have pledged to continue supporting the game by addressing critical bugs and issues to ensure a stable experience for the remaining player base until the very end.

A Thank You to the Community

In an official statement, the development team expressed their gratitude to the players. "We want to thank the players for your dedication and passion," they said. "We are grateful for the time spent crafting the world of Aeternum with you. Together we built something special."

The statement continued, acknowledging the sadness of the closure but honouring the shared experience: "While we are saddened to say goodbye, we're honoured that we were able to share so much with the community. It has been our pleasure to work on New World: Aeternum and evolve this unforgettable adventure with you all."

Legacy of a Short-Lived MMO

New World: Aeternum launched in September 2021 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC. Set on the supernatural island of Aeternum, the game tasked players, as adventurers, with battling a force known as the 'Corrupted'. It blended action combat, extensive crafting systems, territory exploration, and faction-based player-versus-player (PvP) conflict, allowing users to forge gear, build settlements, and form alliances.

Upon release, the game received a mixed critical reception. Reviewers frequently praised its engaging combat mechanics and visually striking world design. However, it faced criticism for a lacklustre narrative and repetitive endgame content, resulting in a Metacritic aggregate score of 75.

The closure of New World: Aeternum represents a significant retreat for Amazon Games from the large-scale, persistent-world MMO arena, a market known for its high development costs and intensely competitive player retention challenges.
