Best Air Purifiers of 2026: Dyson HushJet Tops Expert Tests

Indoor air quality is often overlooked, but airborne particles such as dust, pollen, pet dander and smoke can irritate the respiratory system and trigger allergies. The best air purifiers filter these pollutants, making homes feel less dusty and stuffy. According to Simone Miles, chief executive at Allergy UK, for many people with indoor allergies, their home can be a hazard to their health, and cleaner air can make a world of difference.

Over several months, I tested a range of air purifiers in my own pet-filled period home, from compact designs to larger models that double as side tables. I tracked how each performed against everyday irritants like dust and smoke, and how quickly they improved indoor air quality. Modern purifiers often include extras such as app control, real-time monitoring and quiet sleep modes, but performance varies significantly.

My top pick is the Dyson HushJet compact purifier (£324.97, Amazon.co.uk). In particle tests, it proved extremely capable: during a candle-smoke test, it reacted almost immediately, automatically ramping up airflow. Within 15 minutes, it reduced PM0.3 and PM2.5 particles by around 75 per cent, and after 30 minutes levels were close to undetectable. Controls are simple on the unit, but the MyDyson app offers 10 fan speeds, auto or night mode, timers and detailed air-quality insights updated every 30 seconds.

The HushJet is Dyson’s smallest air purifier, though it remains a floor-standing unit. It is light enough to move between rooms and features a star-shaped nozzle inspired by jet engines. Running costs are low: at 19W, it costs roughly 13p to run over 24 hours. The electrostatic filter lasts up to five years, while the activated carbon filter needs annual replacement at around £35. Noise levels are generally well controlled, though at highest fan speed it reaches around 60dB.

For a budget-friendly option, the Coway Airmega 50 air purifier is quiet and compact, designed for spaces up to 31 square metres. It features a real-time air quality indicator with coloured lights (blue for good, pink for very bad) and a built-in nightlight, making it ideal for children’s bedrooms.
