Manchester Airports Group (MAG) has emailed about 8.7 million customers after hackers accessed their data in a cyber attack this week. The group operates Manchester Airport, London Stansted and East Midlands Airport.
What data was accessed
Hackers accessed information relating to car park, lounge and fast track bookings, as well as in-airport Wi-Fi sign-ups, for all three airports. The compromised data included email addresses, phone numbers, vehicle registrations and postcodes.
MAG said that 'at no point has passenger safety or aviation security been compromised' during the incident. Neither MAG nor the hacked system held customers' bank or payment details.
Email sent to affected customers
People affected are now receiving emails about the hack. The email states: "We're contacting you about a recent cyber security incident involving customer data." It adds: "Our investigation has identified that some of your personal information relating to airport car parking, lounge, Fast Track bookings and on-airport WIFI sign-ups has been accessed by an unauthorised third party."
The email also outlines the action taken by the group. MAG said it 'immediately contained the risk' after taking the hack 'extremely seriously'. The company is now working with cyber security specialists and the relevant authorities.
What customers should do
All upcoming bookings remain valid and are unaffected by the incident. All affected customers have been contacted and do not need to take any action.
Instead, customers should continue to follow standard cyber security good practice. They should remain vigilant for suspicious emails, text messages or phone calls, and avoid clicking on links or opening attachments from unexpected communications. MAG stressed that it will never contact customers unexpectedly to request payment card details, banking information, or passwords.
