Manchester Airports Group (MAG) has suffered a major cyber hack affecting approximately 8.7 million customers across Manchester Airport, London Stansted and East Midlands airports.
Breach discovered on Tuesday
The security breach was discovered on Tuesday (August 25) though it is believed to have happened several days earlier. Hackers accessed data from car park bookings, lounge and fast track services, and in-airport WIFI sign-ups.
Compromised information includes email addresses, phone numbers, vehicle registrations and postcodes. However, no bank or payment details were accessed during the incident.
MAG response and customer advice
MAG has contacted affected customers by email, stating: "We took immediate action to secure the affected system and are working with cyber security specialists and the relevant authorities."
A MAG spokesperson confirmed: "We immediately contained the risk and have been working with specialist advisors and taking appropriate steps to protect our customers and systems." The company stressed that passenger safety and aviation security were never compromised.
Customers have been advised to remain vigilant against unexpected communications claiming to be from MAG. All existing bookings remain valid and airport operations continue normally.
