Exclusive: 'I Feared For My Life' - Shocking Reality of Online Dating Dangers Revealed
1 in 3 Women Fear for Life Using Dating Apps, Survey Reveals

A startling new survey has lifted the lid on the terrifying reality of online dating, revealing that a significant number of women genuinely fear for their physical safety when meeting someone from an app.

The research, commissioned by the Global Fund for Women, uncovered that a massive 31% of female users have experienced such intense anxiety about their personal safety that they feared for their lives. This isn't just casual nervousness; it's a deep-seated fear of physical harm.

The Chilling Statistics Behind the Swipes

The data paints a deeply concerning picture of the modern dating landscape:

  • 1 in 3 women have feared for their life when arranging to meet someone from a dating app.
  • Over half (57%) of female users worry about their physical safety while using these platforms.
  • Nearly a third (30%) have experienced stalking or persistent unwanted contact.
  • 1 in 4 women have been sent unsolicited explicit images.

A Call for Action: Tech Companies Must Do More

Michelle Robinson, a spokesperson for the Global Fund for Women, did not mince her words. She stated that these findings are a damning indictment of tech companies who are "failing in their duty of care" by prioritising profit over user safety.

"It is utterly shocking that in 2024, women are using products that make them fear for their lives," she said. "The fact that such a huge proportion of women are genuinely scared for their safety when meeting someone from a dating app is a scandal. Tech companies must be held accountable."

Beyond the Digital: The Real-World Impact

The threat isn't confined to the digital realm. The survey highlights how online interactions have severe real-world consequences, with many women altering their behaviour and daily routines due to fears sparked from dating app encounters.

This report serves as a crucial wake-up call, demanding that dating platforms owned by giants like Match Group—including Tinder and Hinge—implement more robust verification processes, better reporting tools, and proactive measures to create a safer environment for their users.
