Visiting UK's fastest zipline and conquering fear of heights

I visited the UK's most underrated and terrifying attraction, and it became the ultimate father-daughter bonding experience. Five of us drove three hours to North Wales to experience Zip World Penrhyn Quarry, home to the world's fastest zipline, Velocity, with a 1,200-foot drop.

Last weekend, I surprised my dad with a trip to this historic slate quarry. The team at Zip World were informative, helpful, and calm, easing my anxiety. By the time I was strapped into the harness, I knew I wouldn't be closing my eyes in fear.

After a briefing, we were privately weighed and fitted with helmets, goggles, and harnesses. A practice run on a smaller zipline helped prepare us for the main event. The adrenaline was pumping as we took a bumpy 15-20 minute ride through the quarry, with stunning views of bright blue water and endless piles of old slate.

At the top, we lay face down on individual mats and were hoisted into the air. It was an uncomfortable position, but three staff members ensured I felt safe. As the bed lowered, I dangled like a spider, and after two tense minutes, I was off into a cloud of fog, screaming 'Oh my god'.

It felt like flying, with moisture pelting my skin as I sped up to 120 mph over the vast blue water. The experience was unforgettable, and I wish I could have done it again. For an additional £20, visitors can have their descent filmed.

Afterward, we made a pit stop in Colwyn Bay for pub grub, which I highly recommend as a base for a weekend trip, with its pubs, shops, and clean seaside feel.
