WhatsApp has announced a significant update for its voice and video calling features, introducing five new capabilities that will roll out to users in the UK and beyond. The improvements focus on making calls more flexible, higher quality, and easier to manage across devices.
Web Calling arrives on browser
The most prominent addition is Web Calling, which allows users to make and receive one-to-one and group voice and video calls directly through WhatsApp Web in a browser, without needing the desktop app. This feature is designed for those on shared computers or work laptops that restrict app downloads. Users will also have access to screen sharing, emoji reactions, and a dedicated Calls tab showing recent calls and favourites.
Call Transfer and Waiting Room
Another new feature is Call Transfer, enabling users to move an active group call from one device to another seamlessly. For example, a call started on a phone can be continued on a laptop without hanging up. Additionally, Waiting Room gives hosts more control over group calls. When creating a call link with the 'Require approval to join' option enabled, participants enter a waiting room until the host approves them.
QuickHD and Noise Suppression
Two upgrades focus on call quality. QuickHD ensures high-definition video is available from the very first seconds of a call. Noise Suppression reduces background noise, making voices clearer even in loud environments. This can be managed in in-call settings.
WhatsApp confirmed that these features are rolling out gradually and will be available to everyone soon.
