The Scottish Professional Football League (SPFL) is set to change its rules to allow clubs to field players as young as 15 in first-team league matches, a move aimed at stemming the loss of teenage talent to English Premier League clubs.
Officials will inform clubs this week that youngsters can now make their league debut at 15, extending a rule that previously applied only to the Premier Sports Cup. This means clubs from the Premiership down to League Two can integrate their top youth prospects earlier.
Recent cup appearances have highlighted the disparity: Aberdeen's Andrew Fasanya and Dundee United's Lorenzo Sassetti became their clubs' youngest ever players in the Premier Sports Cup over the past week. However, league rules previously required players to wait until their 16th birthday.
Frustration from Managers
Dundee United manager Jim Goodwin voiced his frustration last week, saying: "It's great in this (Premier Sports Cup) competition that, at 15, you can play because in the league the rules are a little bit different, which I don't really agree with. I think if you're 15 and you're good enough then you should be allowed to go and play."
Former Rangers boss Danny Rohl also expressed frustration last season over being unable to play 15-year-old Kyle Glasgow in league matches.
Broader Measures Against Talent Drain
The SPFL has already amended its registration policy and will communicate the changes via a pre-competition letter later this week. The rule change is part of a wider effort to improve development pathways for young Scottish talent, which has been criticised for lacking structure beneath first-team level.
The Scottish Football Association and SPFL have also introduced cooperation loans, allowing clubs to partner with lower-league teams to send young players on loan, with the ability to recall them as needed inside and outside transfer windows.
