Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has confirmed he will push forward with an under-16 social media ban, despite MPs voting against it in March. The ban will be implemented by Spring 2027, following the Australian model.
Banned Social Media Sites
- TikTok
- YouTube
- Snapchat
- X (formerly Twitter)
- Twitch
- Kick
- Threads
Messaging apps like Signal and WhatsApp will not be banned. The government plans to go further than any other country, with additional restrictions for 17- and 18-year-olds, including social media curfews.
Reactions
YouTube criticised the ban, stating it pushes children towards less safe services. Digital rights activists warn that age verification will require legal ID, raising data breach concerns.
