Being asked to remove your shoes at the airport is a routine security measure stemming from a 2001 incident when a passenger attempted to hide explosives in his shoes. While crucial for safety, it can be inconvenient and leave feet dirty. Travel expert Laurie, a pilot's wife from Houston, Texas, shares two tips on her popular Instagram page to make the process more comfortable.
Tip 1: Clean Your Feet with Antibacterial Wipes
Laurie recommends packing antibacterial wipes in hand luggage. Travelers can quickly clean their feet if required to walk barefoot through security, taking only seconds without delaying the journey. The wipes also serve other purposes, such as wiping down airplane surfaces like windows, TV screens, remote controls, or tray tables to avoid germs.
Tip 2: Pack an Extra Pair of Socks
Even when wearing socks, walking on grimy floors can be unpleasant. Laurie suggests: "Wear a pair of ratty old socks through the [security] line and toss them when done." If disposal isn't possible, bring a spare pair in a small plastic bag. Change into clean socks after security, store the dirty ones in the bag, and wash them at your destination.
Laurie's advice has garnered over 1,100 likes on Instagram, with users expressing gratitude. One commented, "Always the best tips!" Another agreed, "Very good tips."
