Ubisoft has cancelled an extraction shooter set in the Far Cry universe, known by the codename Maverick, in favour of a new spin-off, according to a report from Insider Gaming.
The new game, codenamed Kodiak, has reportedly passed the conception stage at Vantage Studios, a newly created Ubisoft subsidiary. Sources describe the project as 'really ambitious', built on the foundations of Maverick but several years away from release.
Kodiak details and mainline sequel
Kodiak is described as an open world first person shooter where 'player interactions and player-driven stories take centre stage'. It's unclear whether it will be multiplayer or single-player focused.
Meanwhile, the next mainline Far Cry game, codenamed Blackbird, is said to include a multiplayer element where several players can experience the world together. Its release timeline is unknown, but it will likely launch before Kodiak.
Far Cry franchise background
Far Cry hasn't seen a new entry since 2021's Far Cry 6, starring Giancarlo Esposito. Recent sequels have struggled to match the impact of Far Cry 3. Vantage Studios manages development across Assassin's Creed, Far Cry, and Rainbow Six titles, with Assassin's Creed Hexe as their only confirmed project.
