A Scottish butcher has shared a bacon-cooking technique that delivers perfectly cooked rashers in minutes, without the mess of a frying pan.
Simon Bowie's method uses a microwave, a kitchen staple that many might overlook for cooking bacon. The recipe notes explain: "While giving your bacon a blast in the microwave might not be the first cooking method that pops into your head, it's a great life hack for those mornings when you simply don't have time to get the frying pan out."
The approach requires fewer than five minutes of preparation and under two minutes of cooking time, making it considerably faster than using a hob or grill. It also avoids the problem of hot fat spitting across the cooker and the need to scrub pans afterwards.
How the microwave method works
The recipe is designed for one person but can easily be scaled up depending on how many rashers are needed. The only ingredient required is three rashers of bacon per person.
To start, place a sheet of kitchen roll on a microwaveable plate to absorb excess liquid. Arrange the rashers on top, spacing them slightly apart, and cover with another piece of kitchen roll to protect the microwave interior from splattering.
Cooking times and tips
Cook on full power for two minutes, or roughly 30 seconds per rasher at 900W. The recipe notes state: "This is completely personal preference, so we recommend a bit of trial and error."
After the initial cooking time, the bacon will be cooked through but pale and not yet crispy. The notes advise: "Fire them in for another 30 to 40 seconds to crisp up the edges." Once done, serve in a roll with your preferred sauce.
The butcher's notes conclude: "There you have it. Bacon in a hurry, and no greasy pans to wash up. It's a win-win."
