After months of testing 15 pairs of wellington boots from brands including Barbour, Le Chameau, Mountain Warehouse, Muck Boot, Tretorn, Xtratuf, and Grass & Air, the Barbour Bede wellington boots emerged as the best overall, offering a blend of style, protection, durability, and grip. The tests were conducted during a particularly wet winter across parks, forests, beaches, and muddy footpaths in and around London.
How the Wellies Were Tested
The writer, a lifestyle journalist and mother of two young boys, tested women's wellies herself while recruiting her partner and children to test men's and kids' boots. Each pair was worn with both normal and thicker socks during regular wet and windy park visits, puddle-stomping, kick-abouts in mud, rugged forest trails, sandy beaches, and even slippery turf from a family member's garden renovation. All wellies sourced for the article were donated to Lewisham Donation Hub, a local charity for people in need.
Best Wellies Overall: Barbour Bede Wellington Boots
The Barbour Bede wellies, priced from £54.99 (men's at Asos) and £60 (women's at Frasers), are described as light, flexible, and grippy enough for muddy banks. They offer a more tailored fit with an adjustable tab that adds a couple of extra centimetres around the leg, and feature the brand's signature tartan lining for warmth and comfort. However, they are a little difficult to pull on and off and may not suit wide calves. Available in olive, black, or navy, with sizes men's 6-12 and women's 3-9.
Best Budget Wellies: Mountain Warehouse Mucker Neoprene Long Boots
Priced from £47.49 (men's at Amazon) and £49.99 (women's at Mountain Warehouse), these boots feature a soft, flexible neoprene upper, cushioned midsole, and deep tread for excellent grip. They are light, springy, and easy to pull on and off, with enough stretch for wide calves. However, the women's boots are labelled as water-resistant rather than waterproof, so they are best for light rain and puddles below ankle height. The fit is on the wide side, so narrow feet may move around. Available in black and olive, sizes men's 6-13 and women's 4-8.
Best Wellies for Walking: Le Chameau Vierzonord Neoprene-Lined Wellington Boots
At £220 from Le Chameau, these boots are made from supple Chamolux rubber with neoprene lining, offering excellent quality, warmth, support, and anti-fatigue arch support. They are the comfiest wellies tested, with a flexible rubber outer, grippy shock-absorbing soles, and a spot-on fit with room for thick socks. However, they are expensive and the neoprene lining may be too warm for summer. Available in Iconic green, dark Chameau green, or black, with sizes men's 6-13 and women's 2.5-9.
Best Wellies for Kids: Grass & Air Teddy Fleece-Lined Colour-Changing Wellies
Priced from £15 at Mountain Warehouse, these wellies feature a teddy fleece lining for warmth, a rubber outer for durability, and a colour-changing raindrop pattern that turns multicoloured when wet. They are easy for toddlers to pull on, true to size, and waterproof with good grip. However, the fleece interior may not be easy to clean, and at the RRP of £28, the price may be high for fast-growing children. Available in a range of colours, sizes infant 3-13.
Best Ankle Wellies: Tretorn Low Neo Boots
At £100 from Toast, these Swedish-made ankle boots are made from natural rubber with integrated neoprene lining, offering warmth, flexibility, and a light, springy removable insole. The chunky tread provides good grip on treacherous terrain, and pull tabs make them easy to slip on and off. However, they are expensive for ankle wellies, and the wide fit may cause gaping at the ankle. Available in men's sizes 42-45 (8-10.5) and women's 36-42 (3.5-8).
Other Notable Wellies
Muck Boot Unisex Wetland Tall Boots (£134): Extremely hard-wearing and comfortable with unbeatable grip on muddy terrain, but not the most stylish for city use. Features neoprene upper with temperature-regulating air mesh, stretch-fit top lining, and true-to-size fit. Sizes 4-14.
Xtratuf 6-Inch Ankle Deck Boots (£99): Designed for coastal walks, reliably waterproof with XpressCool lining for insulation and foot support, and high-traction soles. However, the look and branding may not appeal to everyone. Available in men's sizes 6-13 and women's 4-9.
Barbour Women's Wilton Wellingtons (£59.95): Chelsea-boot style ankle wellies that are easy to slip on and off, with tartan lining and commando-style sole for decent grip. Not warm enough for winter without thick socks, but great for spring and summer. Sizes 3-9.
What You Need to Know
Neoprene vs Rubber Wellies: Traditional wellies are made of natural rubber for durability and flexibility. Neoprene, a synthetic rubber used in wetsuits, offers warmth and comfort but is made from chloroprene, a toxic petrochemical classified as likely carcinogenic by the US EPA, and is difficult to recycle. Natural rubber is more environmentally friendly and longer-lasting. Many brands combine rubber and neoprene for insulation.
Wellies vs Walking Boots: For long distances or tough terrain, waterproof walking boots may be more supportive. Look for leather boots that are waterproof rather than water-resistant.
How to Clean Your Wellies: Use a soft sponge or cloth with warm soapy water, or a soft-to-medium bristle brush for treads. Avoid leaving dried mud on rubber as it can cause cracking. For the inside, use warm water with laundry detergent, rinse, and stuff with crumpled newspaper to dry. Sprinkle baking soda inside to reduce odours.
