UK Social Media Ban for Under-16s: PM Announces Reforms

Sir Keir Starmer is set to announce a social media ban for under-16s today, vowing to 'call time on a system that's failing our kids'. The Prime Minister will hold a press conference on Monday to unveil sweeping reforms aimed at protecting children online.

Details of the Ban

The UK will follow Australia's example by raising the minimum age to 16 for platforms including TikTok, Instagram, Threads, Facebook, X, YouTube, Snapchat, and Reddit. Restrictions will also target romantic or sexual AI chatbots, and daily social media use will be limited for under-18s to curb late-night scrolling.

Public Consultation

The public consultation on the issue, which closed on May 26, received approximately 116,000 responses, making it the second-largest in history. The government has emphasized the need to address online harms affecting young people.
