Study: Over Half of Teens Use AI for Sexual Images

Alarming Study Reveals Widespread Teen Use of AI for Sexual Image Creation

More than half of teenagers have utilised artificial intelligence to generate sexual images of people, according to a concerning new study. The research also indicates that over a third of young people have had non-consensual nude images created of them using this technology.

The Rise of AI 'Nudification' Among Adolescents

As generative AI technology has advanced rapidly, its application for so-called 'nudification' has proliferated. This process involves users instructing AI tools to produce images depicting what real individuals might appear like without clothing. While such images are illegal across much of the globe, regardless of whether they portray an actual person, the prevalence of this disturbing practice has remained largely undocumented until now.

The new investigation suggests that a majority of young people have both manufactured and received these AI-generated sexual images. Researchers conducted anonymous interviews with 557 English-speaking United States residents aged between 13 and 17, questioning them about their experiences with artificial intelligence for sexual exploitation purposes.

Disturbing Statistics on AI Sexual Exploitation

The study revealed that 55.3 percent of surveyed teens admitted to using tools to create sexual images of themselves or others. Furthermore, 54.4 percent reported having received such an image. Perhaps most troubling, 36.3 percent disclosed that someone had manufactured a sexual image of them without their consent, while 33.2 percent stated that at least one such image had been distributed non-consensually.

Chad Steel from George Mason University, who led the research, commented: "Teens are no longer just digital natives but AI-natives. 'Nudification' and GenAI apps are their new 'sexting', only with more challenging issues surrounding consent."

Demographic Patterns and Psychological Impact

The findings remained largely consistent across different demographic groups participating in the study. However, researchers discovered that male participants were more inclined to create sexual images of themselves or others, both with and without consent.

Those who had fallen victim to AI-powered sexual exploitation reported psychological effects similar to other forms of child sexual abuse. These included persistent fear and hypervigilance about who might have viewed the images, avoidance of social media platforms, feelings of powerlessness to halt the abuse, and a general sense of dehumanisation. Collectively, these experiences caused lasting disruption to their daily lives.

Publication and Broader Implications

The research appears in a new paper titled 'Prevalence of generative artificial intelligence sexualized image usage by adolescents in the United States', published in the respected scientific journal PLOS One. This groundbreaking study highlights the urgent need for greater awareness, education, and potentially regulatory measures concerning the misuse of AI technology among young people.

The findings underscore how rapidly evolving artificial intelligence tools are being misappropriated for harmful purposes, creating new forms of digital exploitation that particularly affect vulnerable adolescent populations. As AI capabilities continue to expand, addressing these emerging threats becomes increasingly critical for protecting young people in the digital age.
