OpenAI has confirmed that its popular AI chatbot ChatGPT is back online after a worldwide outage on Tuesday. The company announced at 1.05pm BST that the service was operational again, while continuing to monitor the situation.
The outage, which began around 12.17pm BST, saw a surge in user reports on Down Detector, with over a thousand submissions. OpenAI initially acknowledged the issue at 12.23pm BST, stating that the root cause had been identified and a fix was underway.
Users still experiencing problems may be affected by high traffic and limited server availability. OpenAI has implemented access limits, and users are advised to wait five to 30 minutes before retrying. Other suggested steps include refreshing the page, using incognito mode, clearing the browser cache, or using a VPN.
Such outages are not uncommon during peak usage times, but loading issues typically resolve within minutes. OpenAI has not disclosed the specific cause of the outage.
