Louis Theroux Warns Parents About Manosphere's Influence on Boys in Netflix Documentary
Louis Theroux Warns Parents About Manosphere Influence on Boys

Renowned documentary filmmaker Louis Theroux has issued a direct warning to parents of boys following disturbing encounters while filming his latest Netflix documentary exploring the controversial online world known as the Manosphere.

Inside the Manosphere: A Disturbing Exploration

The ninety-minute documentary titled Inside the Manosphere sees Theroux investigating how prominent male content creators are shaping young men's perceptions of masculinity and gender roles. The fifty-five-year-old documentarian immersed himself in this digital subculture, meeting influential figures including Harrison Sullivan (known online as HSTikkyTokky), Myron Gaines, Nicolas Kenn De Balinthazy (Sneako), Justin Waller, and Ed Matthews.

The Manosphere Explained

The Manosphere refers to an extensive online network encompassing forums, websites, and blogs that promote anti-feminist ideologies, traditional masculinity, and often misogynistic viewpoints. At the documentary's outset, Theroux observes how he noticed 'parts of the Internet were being taken over' by male influencers claiming to offer young men 'cheat codes to win at life.'

Speaking to The Mirror, Theroux emphasized the mainstream reach of these figures: 'These aren't figures on the margins - anyone who's got kids, and especially boys, will know that they are making inroads into the culture. Their influence is being felt in schools, in the workplace and all across the internet.'

Confrontational Filming Experience

Throughout the documentary production, Theroux faced significant abuse as the influencers filmed him for their social media platforms. During livestreams, they subjected him to hostile questions from their followers, resulting in Theroux receiving abusive comments about his previous documentary work with the late Jimmy Savile.

The filming revealed disturbing behaviors within this community, including homophobic conduct by HSTikkyTokky and Myron Gaines discussing his desire for multiple wives in front of his girlfriend.

Parental Concerns in the Digital Age

Reflecting on his own parenting experience, Theroux acknowledged the challenges modern parents face: 'They probably spend more hours looking at their phones than they do talking to us and we don't always know what they're looking at.' While parents hope their influence outweighs online content, Theroux suggests this balance is increasingly difficult to maintain.

Netflix's Broader Context

Reports first emerged in September 2025 that Theroux would front a new Netflix documentary inspired by the streaming platform's successful series Adolescence. That scripted drama, created by and starring Stephen Graham, follows thirteen-year-old Jamie Miller (played by Owen Cooper) who is accused of murdering a schoolgirl, with Graham portraying the boy's father.

The series achieved remarkable viewership, reaching 24.3 million views within its first four days of release, and has been widely praised for highlighting the online radicalisation of young men and boys - themes that directly connect to Theroux's documentary investigation.

Theroux's warning comes at a critical moment as parents, educators, and policymakers grapple with the growing influence of online communities that promote extreme views about gender and masculinity to vulnerable young audiences.
