Senior European Journalist Suspended Over AI-Generated Quotes Scandal
Peter Vandermeersch, a prominent journalist at the European publishing group Mediahuis, has been suspended after confessing to using artificial intelligence to "wrongly put words into people’s mouths". This admission came following an internal investigation by one of Mediahuis's own newspapers, NRC, where Vandermeersch previously served as editor-in-chief.
AI Tools Lead to Fabricated Quotes
Vandermeersch, who holds a fellowship in "journalism and society" at Mediahuis, acknowledged that he "fell into the trap of hallucinations" when employing AI technologies such as ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google's NotebookLM. He used these tools to summarize reports but failed to verify the accuracy of the quotes generated, subsequently publishing them in his Substack newsletter.
The investigation by NRC revealed that Vandermeersch had published dozens of false quotes, with seven individuals quoted in his posts confirming they never made the statements attributed to them. In a Substack post titled "I am admitting my mistake", Vandermeersch expressed regret, stating, "I wrongly put words into people’s mouths, when I should have presented them as paraphrases. In some cases, it reflected my interpretation of their words. That was not just careless – it was wrong."
Violation of Mediahuis's AI Policies
In response to the incident, Gert Ysebaert, the chief executive of Mediahuis, issued a statement emphasizing the company's strict guidelines for AI usage. "At Mediahuis we apply strict rules for the use of AI, where diligence, human oversight and transparency are essential. The fact that these principles were not followed runs counter to the standards we uphold and to our commitment to readers that we stand for reliable journalism," Ysebaert said. As a result, Vandermeersch has been temporarily suspended from his role, and several of his articles have been removed from the Irish Independent website.
Broader Implications for Journalism and AI
Vandermeersch, who regularly writes about the connection between a free press and democracy on his Press and Democracy blog, admitted to a second error by not correcting the false quotes promptly. He noted his enthusiasm for AI's potential in journalism but conceded, "Journalism is human work. I remain convinced that AI can be a powerful tool – one that can help journalism become better, dig deeper, and be more precise. But not by using AI in the way I did in the early months of this blog."
This case highlights the ongoing challenges and ethical dilemmas faced by journalists as AI tools become more prevalent. While AI can assist with tasks ranging from simple summaries to complex research, it is prone to errors, underscoring the need for rigorous human oversight in news reporting.
