Burger King is set to deploy an artificial intelligence chatbot, named "Patty," which will assess workers' friendliness and monitor whether they use polite phrases such as "please" and "thank you," according to a recent report. The voice-enabled AI system will be integrated into employees' headsets, serving as both a coaching tool and an evaluator of customer interactions.

How the AI System Works and Its Training

The OpenAI-powered chatbot, part of the BK Assistant Program, has been trained using data compiled from franchises and customer feedback to recognize indicators of friendliness. Thibault Roux, Burger King's chief digital officer, explained that the AI was taught phrases like "Welcome to Burger King," "please," and "thank you" as key markers of employee politeness. Managers can query the AI to gauge their location's performance on friendliness metrics, positioning it as a resource for improvement rather than mere surveillance.

Functionality Beyond Monitoring: Assistance and Operations

Beyond evaluating friendliness, Patty assists employees with practical tasks. Workers can ask the AI questions about meal preparation, such as how to make specific items like the iconic Whopper, or how to clean kitchen equipment. The system is also integrated into Burger King's new cloud point-of-sale system, enabling it to alert managers to equipment malfunctions or out-of-stock menu items, with updates possible within 15 minutes.

Pilot Programs and Broader AI Testing

The AI system is currently being piloted in 500 restaurants, with plans to roll out the BK Assistant web and app platform to all U.S. locations by the end of the year. Additionally, Burger King is testing AI technologies at drive-thrus in fewer than 100 restaurants, though Roux noted this remains a "risky bet" as not all customers are ready for such automation.

Burger King joins a growing trend of fast food chains incorporating AI into operations. For instance, Taco Bell began rolling out AI-powered drive-thrus last summer, though it experienced glitches and slowed the rollout for evaluation. Similarly, McDonald's previously removed its AI ordering tools from U.S. drive-thrus after online videos showcased ordering errors, despite extensive testing at over 100 locations.

This move highlights the increasing reliance on AI in the fast food sector to enhance efficiency, training, and customer service, albeit with challenges and public scrutiny over technology mishaps.
