Apple has officially launched a new and improved version of its AirTag tracking device, designed to make locating personal items significantly easier than before. The small, coin-sized puck can be attached to various objects and monitored through a connected smartphone.
Enhanced Tracking Capabilities
The updated AirTag features new wireless connectivity technology that allows for precise location tracking from up to 50 per cent further away compared to previous models. This advancement means users should experience fewer instances of losing connection with their tagged items, providing more reliable tracking across greater distances.
Improved Audible Alerts
Alongside the extended range, Apple has equipped the new AirTag with a substantially improved speaker system. The company claims the speaker is 50 per cent louder than previous versions and should be audible from twice the distance, making it easier to locate items through sound cues when they are nearby but out of sight.
Beyond these two major upgrades, the fundamental design and functionality of the AirTag remain consistent with earlier iterations. The device continues to operate through Apple's extensive crowdsourced network of smartphones, enabling location tracking even when disconnected from the owner's primary device.
Addressing Privacy Concerns
Since their initial release in 2021, AirTags have faced considerable controversy regarding potential misuse for stalking and unauthorised tracking. Apple has responded to these concerns by implementing multiple security updates over the years, including features that alert smartphone users if an unknown AirTag appears to be travelling with them.
In their official announcement, Apple emphasised that "the new AirTag incorporates a suite of industry-first protections against unwanted tracking." The company reiterated that these devices are "exclusively for tracking objects, and not people or pets," directly addressing ongoing privacy worries.
Practical Sharing Features
Apple also highlighted the practical applications of their "Share Item Location" feature, which allows temporary sharing of an object's location with another person. This functionality proves particularly useful in scenarios such as sharing luggage tracking information with airlines to assist in recovering lost baggage during travel.
The launch represents Apple's continued commitment to refining their tracking technology while balancing innovation with responsible privacy safeguards in an increasingly connected world.
