A Wimbledon umpire was forced to intervene during a men's wheelchair doubles match on Wednesday afternoon, interrupting a stunning rally and leaving BBC Sport commentators visibly disappointed. The incident occurred during the clash between British duo Alfie Hewett and Gordon Reid and their opponents Tom Egberink and Maarten Ter Hofte.
Umpire calls for let after premature ball roll
As the players engaged in an extraordinary rally, a courtside ball kid prematurely rolled balls onto the court, apparently believing the point had ended. The umpire halted play and ordered a let, nullifying what would have been a spectacular point.
BBC commentator Matt Chilton, who was covering the match, voiced his frustration. "Oh no, the umpire has called to the match to stop and play a let," he said. His co-commentator added: "That was a superb rally. I think he said a ball person had dropped a ball."
Commentators lament lost magic moment
Chilton continued: "I think he said ball kid, didn't hear the rest of it." The co-commentator replied: "What a shame, it was a magic point. I feel for [inaudible] there. That was superb. Hand around the back, it was incredible."
Despite the disappointment, Chilton tried to find a silver lining: "It was an exhibition rally. They might do it again." His colleague agreed: "I hope so."
Hewett and Reid win match
Despite the interruption, Hewett and Reid went on to win the match, according to reports. The British pair have been dominant in wheelchair doubles, with Hewett being a multiple Grand Slam champion.
