West Ham Eye Nickson for Director of Football

Former Newcastle head of recruitment Steve Nickson is under serious consideration for the role of director of football at West Ham United. Standard Sport understands that Nickson is among several candidates being evaluated, although no agreement has been reached yet.

Nickson's Track Record

Nickson is widely respected for his work at Newcastle United, where he played a key role in securing the signings of Bruno Guimaraes and Alexander Isak. His expertise in recruitment has made him a prominent figure in football circles.

Earlier this week, reports suggested Nickson was exploring opportunities in the Championship. It is now understood that he is one of the leading contenders to oversee West Ham's recruitment strategy following the club's relegation from the Premier League.

West Ham's Recruitment Void

West Ham have been without a dedicated head of recruitment since Kyle Macauley left the position in October 2025, following the departure of manager Graham Potter. The club is now looking to restructure its operations to secure an immediate return to the top flight after a 14-year absence from the Championship.

Ownership Changes

The club is set for significant changes in leadership, with Daniel Kretinsky poised to become the majority shareholder. This follows David Sullivan's resignation as chairman, effective immediately. In a joint statement from Vanessa Gold and Kretinsky last weekend, it was confirmed that 1890 Holdings, owned by Kretinsky, would increase its shares to approximately 43%, making him the largest shareholder.

Sullivan's 16-year tenure at West Ham ended in early June after an investigation by BBC Panorama and The Times into serious historical allegations. Sullivan has denied the allegations, stating he stepped down to focus his energy on defending against what he calls false claims.
