US Open: No Interference with McIlroy's Ball, Officials Say

The United States Golf Association (USGA) has officially confirmed that a fan did not interfere with Rory McIlroy's ball during the opening round of the US Open on Thursday. The incident, which occurred at Shinnecock Hills, sparked controversy when it appeared a spectator had picked up the Northern Irishman's ball on the fourth hole.

Incident Details

As McIlroy played his second shot from thick rough toward the green, the ball bounced off a cart path and into a spectator area. A female fan was seen approaching the ball and appeared to pick it up, prompting shouts of "No" from nearby spectators. This would have been a breach of professional golf rules.

USGA Statement

However, the USGA released a statement clarifying that McIlroy's ball was not lifted. The statement read: "Right after McIlroy’s second shot on the 4th hole came to rest, it appeared on the broadcast that a fan was about to pick it up when the camera moved away. However, based on the testimony of fans and a review of the available video, his ball was not lifted. The fan stopped just before picking it up and McIlroy played the ball as it lay."
