Newcastle University's Dove Marine Laboratory in Cullercoats could undergo a major redesign, including revamped scientific and public spaces, pending council approval.
Proposed changes
The plans include a two-storey extension for office space, a lab, and a tropical aquarium, as well as another extension for a dry room, toilets, and storage. A new education suite and exhibition space are also proposed.
Additionally, the plans call for a new pedestrian access bridge and external platform to connect to existing steps.
Funding and background
A Newcastle University spokesperson said: "We have submitted a planning application for the Dove Marine Laboratory as part of our long-term ambition to improve the facility. Last year, we received development funding from the National Lottery Heritage Fund to develop proposals, and this planning application is an important step in preparing the project should it proceed. Further developments are subject to the outcome of a further funding bid. We will be able to provide more information if and when there is a substantive update."
In June last year, the National Lottery's Heritage Fund granted over £330,000 to the lab to help with development proposals. At the time of publication, no decision has been made by either council planners or the local authority's planning committee.
The facility is dedicated to the study of marine biology, oceanography, environmental science, and coastal processes. It also aims to conserve and manage marine resources.
The lab buildings were opened by the Duke of Northumberland on September 29, 1908. In 1909, the lab became a department of Armstrong College, which later became Newcastle University.
