Ty Penbryn, a Georgian mansion in Carmarthenshire, hosted a murder mystery dinner show that a journalist attended for the first time. The property, set within 1.8 acres of landscaped gardens, sleeps up to 24 guests and features a pool, cinema room, and hot tub.
A Grand Setting for a Crime Evening
The house, once home to Welsh poet Sir Lewis Morris, has nine bedrooms in the main house, all with en suite bathrooms, plus two more in an accessible annex. Living spaces include a large kitchen, a dining room seating 24, a games room, a music room, a billiards room, and an entrance hall with a jukebox, karaoke, and a disco ball.
Upstairs, a cinema room has a 100-inch television, and a separate office is available. The leisure wing includes an indoor pool, sauna, steam room, jacuzzi, and heated loungers. Outside, there are landscaped gardens, a multi-use games area for pickleball and football, and a pirate ship play area.
Dinner Show Format Revealed
The event was a murder-mystery dinner show, provided by the Welsh company Dying To Meet You Murder Mystery Company. Rebecca Tredeger founded the company after finding traditional boxed games unsuitable for larger groups. She wrote her own scripts and brought in actors, allowing guests to sit back while still feeling involved. The company has been running since 2015 and has won awards.
The cast of one woman and three men made a dramatic entrance and established a 1920s Carmarthenshire murder by poisoning. The action unfolded in front of the guests, rather than involving assigned characters or clue-hunting.
Group Dynamics and Entertainment
The journalist noted that guests quickly became swept up in the drama, with some taking extensive notes and interrogating the actors with intensity. The cast stayed in character while fielding questions, and the pacing was controlled by the actors, who decided when to bring the evening to a close.
One slight drawback was that the solution was handed to the guests rather than solved by them. However, the journalist suggested that gathering a group for a DIY version of The Traitors at the property could be just as fun, with a dedicated host acting as Claudia Winkleman and a mix of secret roles, missions, and round-table banishments.
