Tottenham Hotspur have confirmed the permanent sale of striker Alejo Veliz to Brazilian club Bahia for a fee reported to be around €9 million (£7.7 million), making it the club's fifth summer transfer decision as they overhaul a squad that narrowly avoided relegation last season.
Veliz's Underwhelming Spurs Career
The 22-year-old Argentine joined Tottenham from Rosario Central in August 2023 for £13 million, signing a six-year contract until 2029. However, he made only eight first-team appearances across all competitions, with his last outing for the club in December 2023.
Veliz scored his sole Tottenham goal that same month under then-manager Ange Postecoglou, coming off the bench to net in a 4-2 Premier League defeat at Brighton. He was subsequently loaned to La Liga side Sevilla in January 2024, spent the 2024/25 campaign at Espanyol, and returned to Rosario Central on loan last season, scoring six goals in 24 appearances.
In a statement, Tottenham said: “We wish him well for the future.”
Busy Summer Window Under De Zerbi
Spurs are wasting no time reshaping their squad for a first full season under head coach Roberto De Zerbi, having endured back-to-back 17th-place finishes and only secured Premier League survival on the final day of the 2024/25 campaign.
Defensively, Tottenham have completed free transfers for Liverpool left-back Andy Robertson and Bournemouth centre-back Marcos Senesi, followed by the £52 million capture of Dutch defender Jan Paul van Hecke from Brighton. Experienced goalkeeper Martin Dubravka will also join once his contract at relegated Burnley expires, while Antonin Kinsky has signed a new deal ahead of an expected exit for No.1 Guglielmo Vicario.
In midfield, Spurs are pursuing big-money deals for Sandro Tonali and Mateus Fernandes. Yves Bissouma was among 11 players released, Lucas Bergvall has requested to leave, and defender Ben Davies has signed fresh terms. The club has also been linked with wingers Marcus Rashford and Savinho, plus England goalkeeper James Trafford.
