Thousands of athletes are preparing to descend on Swansea to compete in Ironman 70.3 for the second consecutive year. Professional triathletes from around the world will also arrive in the city to participate in the event's pro series.
Event Details
The event, scheduled for Sunday, July 12, will put the spotlight on Swansea as it is broadcast for free across multiple platforms, including proseries.ironman.com, DAZN, and l'Équipe in France.
Athletes will first tackle a one-loop 1.2-mile (1.9 km) swim starting at the Prince of Wales Dock. They then head out on a one-loop 56-mile (90 km) bike ride through Mumbles, along roads hugging the Gower's coastal clifftops, before cycling through rural Swansea and returning along the bay into the city. The race concludes with a 13.1-mile (21.1 km) two-loop run course from the city centre, past Swansea Arena, towards Mumbles, and back to the finish line at the marina.
Road Closures
Organisers have announced the following road closures to facilitate the event on Sunday, July 12:
City Centre and Oystermouth Road
Closures from 6:00 AM to 5:00 PM. After the swim at Prince of Wales Dock, athletes run over Sail Bridge to transition. They start the bike course from East Burrows Road car park, travelling onto Somerset Place and west on Oystermouth Road (A4067). One side of Sail Bridge remains open for pedestrians on race morning. Somerset Place is closed to cars Saturday from 7:00 AM to 6:00 PM and Sunday from 4:00 AM to 6:00 PM. Burrows Place and Adelaide Street are closed to cars from 4:00 AM to 8:00 PM. Bikes continue along the bay through Mumbles, around parts of Gower, before returning to East Burrows car park via Oystermouth Road. The two-lap run course leaves East Burrows car park and uses Swansea Bay Cycle Path/promenade down to Lilliput Lane/TA Centre. On return, they use the bike path before joining Oystermouth Road through Sketty Lane Car Park to Museum Park after the second lap. Oystermouth Road is closed westbound only from 6:00 AM to 5:00 PM.
Kings Road
Closed from 4:00 AM to 10:00 AM between Sail Bridge and Y Fforwm building car park for pedestrian safety.
Mumbles
Closed from 6:00 AM to 10:00 AM. The course follows Mumbles Road past Mumbles Pier and turns right by Limeslade Bay outside Forte's Ice Cream onto Plunch Lane. Mumbles Road is closed southbound only up to Village Lane between 6:00 AM and 10:00 AM. Cars can travel northbound from Village Lane towards Swansea during the closure.
Newton (B4593), Bishopston
Closed from 6:30 AM to 10:30 AM. The course follows Plunch Lane and Higher Lane, turns left onto Southward Lane B4593 / Caswell Road through Newton past Caswell Bay Beach, then Caswell Road North, left onto Pyle Road/Bishopston Road, and left onto Pennard Road B4436. These roads are fully closed during this period.
Kittle, Murton
Closed from 6:30 AM to 12:30 PM, then 12:30 PM to 1:45 PM. The B4436 from Murton Green to Vennaway Lane junction is fully closed from 6:30 AM to 12:30 PM. It opens westbound towards Pennard from 12:30 PM and fully opens in both directions by 1:45 PM.
Vennaway Lane
Closed from 6:30 AM to 1:30 PM. Fully closed from 6:30 AM to 12:30 PM, then opens for northbound traffic turning left and right on South Gower Road from 12:30 PM. Fully open by 1:30 PM.
Pennard, Southgate
Closed from 7:15 AM to 10:45 AM. The course follows Pennard Road through Kittle and Pennard, makes a U-turn in Southgate outside Three Cliffs Café, then bikes travel back through Pennard and turn left onto Vennaway Lane.
Parkmill, Penmaen, Nicholaston, Reynoldston, Cilibion
Closed from 7:00 AM to 12:30 PM, and 7:00 AM to 1:00 PM. The A4118 through Parkmill, Penmaen, Nicholaston is closed up to Reynoldston junction between 7:00 AM and 12:30 PM. The route then travels north towards Reynoldston before turning east to Cilibion, which is fully closed from 7:00 AM to 1:00 PM.
Llanrhidian, Penuel, Three Crosses
Closed from 7:30 AM to 11:30 AM, and 7:00 AM to 12:00 PM. From Cilibion, the course travels to Llanrhidian, closed 7:30 AM to 11:30 AM. Then east through Penuel and onto Three Crosses, before heading southbound on Tirmynydd Road, fully closed from 7:30 AM to 12:00 PM.
Upper Killay, Langrove, Lunnon, Ilston, Llethryd
Closed from 7:30 AM to 1:00 PM, and 7:00 AM to 1:30 PM. The bike course includes a larger outer loop and a smaller inner loop through Llethryd on the B4271, closed 7:30 AM to 1:00 PM. South Gower Road A4118 from Upper Killay junction to Vennaway Lane is closed southbound from 7:00 AM to 1:30 PM.
Clyne Common, West Cross
Closed from 8:30 AM to 1:45 PM. Athletes finish the bike course by following B4436 (Clyne Common) eastbound, turning right onto Fairwood Road through West Cross, then down the hill on Fairwood Road and left onto A4067 to return to Swansea city centre. Clyne Common from Fairwood Road to Murton Green is closed eastbound from 8:30 AM to 1:45 PM. Fairwood Road is closed eastbound from 8:30 AM to 1:45 PM.
Travel Advice
People travelling to the event are warned of ongoing roadworks on Fabian Way between the Jersey Marine junction (Amazon roundabout) and the M4 slip road, and advised to allow extra time for their journey.
