Stirling Council’s top official, Lord Provost Rosemary Fraser, joined the volunteer contingent at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, assisting at Scotstoun Stadium, while a colleague from the local authority took on refereeing duties in the boxing event.
Volunteer roles at Scotstoun
Rosemary Fraser was assigned to Scotstoun Stadium, where she helped and greeted athletes, family members, high-profile supporters and VIPs. Civic Driver Paul Coleman and other council staff also volunteered at the Games, with Paul serving as a referee for all boxing matches.
Prior to joining the council, Paul spent over seven years as Regional Development Officer for Boxing Scotland and holds international officiating qualifications.
A memorable moment
The Lord Provost watched one Scottish athlete secure a track and field medal, describing it as a privilege to volunteer at Glasgow 2026. She said: “It’s been a privilege to volunteer at Glasgow 2026 and to be part of the exciting atmosphere at the Games. Welcoming people from all over the world to Scotland has been a great experience, as has seeing these inspiring and dedicated athletes at first-hand.
“I was especially lucky to catch Megan Keith bringing home the bronze to an ecstatic and ear-splitting Scotstoun home crowd.”
Stirling's community spirit
She highlighted the reliance of major events on volunteers, adding: “Major events like the Commonwealth Game rely on the commitment of volunteers. We have a proud record of volunteering and community spirit in Stirling, so it’s no surprise that so many people from the area, including our own council staff, are giving up their own time to share their skills and expertise and help make the Games a success. My thanks to them all.”
Scotland finished fifth in the medal table with 39 medals, including 13 gold. The University of Stirling, known as Scotland’s University for Sporting Excellence, broke its Commonwealth Games medal record.
The Lord Provost added: “It’s been fantastic to see the success of Scotland and the record-breaking achievements of athletes at the University of Stirling on the international stage. We are proud that Stirling is home to such sporting excellence and I’m sure it will inspire people of all ages in our communities to get more active and involved in sport.”
