Lawrence Shankland took just four minutes to open his Ibrox account as a Rangers player, converting an early penalty in a 2-1 friendly win over St Etienne. But Derek McInnes will hope the recruitment team find more attacking talent to avoid a difficult season.
New faces, same frustrations
This was the first public outing for McInnes' side, watched by 24,000 supporters. Five of his new signings started, but the team still lacked cutting edge. New goalkeeper Ivor Pandur made a smart save early on, while defender Ben Godfrey needs time to build an understanding with centre-back partner Manny Fernandez, who looked casual at times. Returning right-back Ross McCrorie showed energy, and Dan Neil was tidy in midfield. Cammy Devlin, on at half-time, quickly added fight.
Law-man pounces
Shankland, a boyhood Rangers fan, scored the early penalty after Mohamed Diomande was tripped. He nearly added a second with a long-range effort that almost crept under the bar. His partnership with Youssef Chermiti showed promise but needs more work.
Wing-man wishlist
McInnes has strengthened the spine of the team but needs wide players. Findlay Curtis started on the left but lacks experience, while Diomande was asked to play on the right, earning the penalty but highlighting a lack of natural width.
Brogues and a ban for Del
McInnes, managing at Ibrox for the first time since his playing days, wore a suit but will serve a three-game touchline ban for comments made as Hearts manager. Rangers are appealing, meaning he may not be on the bench for a competitive home game until August 13.
Pass the armband
With James Tavernier gone, the captaincy is undecided. McInnes has used three different captains in three games: Dan Neil, Lawrence Shankland, and Ben Godfrey. The permanent choice will be revealed on the opening league night at Tannadice.
