George Russell crashed out while leading the Sprint race in Singapore, adding to Mercedes' recent misery. The Saturday short-form race was delayed by around half an hour because of a heavy downpour before the start.
Russell enjoyed a superb launch from second on the grid, passing pole-sitter Max Verstappen before the field even reached the first corner. Despite the difficult conditions, the entire field made it through the opening lap without incident.
Crash on Lap Two
It was at the end of the second lap that it all unravelled for Russell. As he came around the final corner, the Mercedes driver ran wide and touched a painted line where there was still standing water. He lost the rear of the car and it slammed into the wall, ending his Sprint race.
The incident occurred on the start-finish straight, with Russell's car making heavy contact with the barriers.
Impact for Mercedes
The crash represents another setback for Mercedes, who had been hoping for a strong showing in Singapore. Russell had been leading the race at the time of the accident.
