Darren Purse has left Cardiff City with immediate effect after being appointed manager of League of Ireland Premier Division side Sligo Rovers. The former Bluebirds captain ended nearly five years overseeing Cardiff's academy pathway, having taken charge of the under-21s in December 2021.
Academy success
Purse earned widespread praise for developing young players and was instrumental in producing academy graduates now breaking into Brian Barry-Murphy's first team. Last season, Cardiff handed more league minutes to academy graduates than any other EFL club, including Dylan Lawlor, Joel Colwill, Ronan Kpakio, Cian Ashford, and Rob Tankiewicz. According to EFL data, academy-developed players accounted for 33.5% of all minutes played by Cardiff during the 2025/26 season.
New challenge
Purse takes over at Sligo following John Russell's departure to become head coach of Irish champions Shelbourne. Sligo are competing in the League of Ireland Premier Division and have recent experience of UEFA Conference League qualifying under Russell. This is Purse's first senior managerial role, fulfilling an ambition he discussed with WalesOnline earlier this summer.
“Do I want to go and be at a higher level? Under-21s Category One coach at a club or first team? I don't know where it goes for me at this moment in time,” he said. “You have to have that burning ambition, that drive to be better. And I have it every day. Can I go in and be a better coach? Can I go in and be a better manager? If I'm being honest, I'm not really a coach. I'm more of a manager. I love all the stuff that I do with the loans and the pathways.”
Purse made 91 appearances for Cardiff as a player between 2005 and 2008 before returning in a coaching capacity. His departure comes just weeks before the new Championship season.
