Peter Crouch Anthem Tops Poll of Funniest Football Chants
A chant celebrating former England striker Peter Crouch's height has been named the funniest football chant in the UK, according to a survey by Stonegate Group. The chant, 'He's tall, he's red, his feet stick out the bed, Peter Crouch,' narrowly beat Neil Diamond's 'Sweet Caroline' into second place, with Fat Les' 'Vindaloo' rounding out the top three.
The research, which surveyed 2,000 English and Scottish football fans, also highlighted newer chants such as 'Rice, Rice baby' for Declan Rice and a tongue-in-cheek tribute to Harry Maguire. The chant culture extends beyond stadiums, with 52% of fans admitting to singing football songs in pubs and stadiums, 30% at family gatherings, 21% at parties, 16% on holidays, 10% at work, 9% on public transport, and even 4% at weddings.
Fans Split on Singing at Home
When watching from the sofa, 36% of fans say they sing along often or very often, while an equal 36% rarely or never join in. The research precedes Stonegate Group's 'Roar of the Nation' challenge, in partnership with Heineken, which encourages fans to cheer loudly during Scotland and England's fixtures at participating venues across England and Scotland.
Kay Bartlett, Chief Marketing Officer at Stonegate Group, said: 'Football tournaments are all about shared moments, atmosphere and traditions. There's nothing quite like watching a huge match and enjoying the experience surrounded by fellow fans in a packed pub. Our Roar of the Nation campaign will allow us to measure the atmosphere in pubs across England and Scotland during the World Cup to see where the loudest fans and experiences of the tournament can be enjoyed.'
Loudest Venue Recorded at 133.9dB
New sound data from Stonegate Group places The Minories in London as the noisiest venue in the UK, logging 133.9dB during England's opening game celebrations after Rashford's goal. This is as loud as a jet engine taking off (130-140dB) and louder than an ambulance siren or pneumatic drill (both 120-130dB). Scotland's loudest venue so far is The Chanter in Edinburgh, which recorded 121.6dB after McGinn's opener against Haiti.
Craig Woolley, Marketing Activation Director at HEINEKEN UK, said: 'Nothing beats the buzz of the pub when our home teams are playing. From the first chant to the final whistle, it's where fans come together to share the tension, excitement and pure joy of the big occasion - and we can't wait.'
