The 154th Open Championship will tee off on Thursday, July 16, at Royal Birkdale, with local golfer Matt Baldwin given the honour of hitting the opening shot at 6:35am. The 40-year-old Southport native secured his place in his fourth Open by coming through final qualifying at Dundonald.
Baldwin's Dream Start
Baldwin expressed his excitement about playing in an Open at Royal Birkdale, saying: "Everything, really, I'm a Southport lad through and through. I have played The Open at Lytham and Hoylake so it would complete the set [of appearances at Open rota venues on the northwest coast of England]. That's the ultimate for me. I am 40 years old, so realistically this is my last chance to play at Birkdale [in The Open]. Whatever happens, it is going to be exciting." He added: "It will be the dream, amazing. I can imagine it will be nerve-wracking, but it will be incredible. To have all my best friends, my family, my wife, everyone who means something to me there will be amazing."
Fleetwood and McIlroy's Start Times
Another Southport local, Tommy Fleetwood, will tee off at 10:09am alongside Jordan Spieth and Jon Rahm. Meanwhile, world number two and reigning Masters champion Rory McIlroy faces a late draw, starting at 3:15pm in the marquee afternoon group with 2024 winner Xander Schauffele and Ryder Cup teammate Matt Fitzpatrick.
Scheffler and Other Notable Groups
World number one and defending champion Scottie Scheffler tees off at 9:58am alongside fellow American Bryson DeChambeau and England's Tyrrell Hatton. Justin Rose, who finished fourth as a 17-year-old amateur at Royal Birkdale in 1998, is grouped with Viktor Hovland and Russell Henley at 9:36am. US PGA champion Aaron Rai is paired with 2019 winner Shane Lowry and five-time major champion Brooks Koepka at 2:53pm.
