Newcastle United are closing in on the signing of Monaco midfielder Aladji Bamba, with the 20-year-old set to become the fourth first team signing at St James' Park this summer.
The France youth international has jetted into Tyneside on Thursday to conduct his medical and undergo the final formalities of the deal before putting pen to paper on his move to Newcastle.
Youthful recruitment drive
High on potential, but low on experience has been the theme of Newcastle's summer business so far with Bamba joining Ewen Jaouen, Bazoumana Toure and fellow midfielder Sean Steur at the club, with all four players 20 years of age or under.
With that in mind, very few Newcastle fans would have seen much of Bamba - particularly given he only broke into the Monaco team at the start of last season.
Who is Aladji Bamba?
It was Adi Hutter, Monaco's manager at the start of the 2025/26 season, who showed faith in Bamba by handing him his debut in a win over Auxerre in September. Having come through the youth system at Blois, he joined Monaco's academy in 2021 and has progressed through the youth levels at both club and international level, gaining experience in the UEFA Youth League and Premier League International Cup, and winning the Maurice Revello Tournament with France's under-20s last summer.
A midfielder, who can play as a six or an eight, Hutter handed him his chance as a teenager and he repaid the faith of the Austrian coach.
"I’d like to compliment Aladji, who, at only 19 years old, was starting for the first time in his Ligue 1 career," Hutter said after the game. "He played like someone with great experience, so I’m happy with his performance. I’d also like to congratulate the Academy and the Elite Group who help prepare young players for the professional team."
Bamba went on to make 25 appearances across Ligue 1, Coupe de France and the Champions League last term and won 9.1 duels per 90 minutes in Ligue 1 in 2025-26, the most of any midfielder to play 500+ minutes.
Inspiration and praise
He thrived in the absence of Paul Pogba who only returned to action at the end of last season but he is said to have been inspired by the 2018 World Cup winner, with whom insiders at Monaco felt he shared 'undoubted similarities'.
Hutter was replaced by Union SG boss Sebastien Pocognoli midway through the season but the Belgian coach kept faith in Bamba and he praised his 'patience', 'humility' and 'work ethic' as the reasons for why he thrived at first team level.
"As for Aladji Bamba, I feel he is constantly improving despite his youth," Pocognoli told Monaco's club website back in March. "At this age, these can be more challenging matches, but for the moment, he demonstrates great consistency over periods of 60 to 70 minutes; the next step will be to push himself even further physically. What I appreciate most about him is his humility and his daily work ethic. Mentally, he has proven to me that he is ready for the top level. He has shown patience - a quality that is becoming a virtue in modern football. Even during difficult times, he never gave up. He continued to work to demonstrate that he could turn the situation around, and today, it shows on the pitch."
Impact at Newcastle
Bamba has been described by his brother as a 'technical leader' rather than a player who will 'raise his voice' and he will join a midfield group that is now a mixture of youth and experience at Newcastle.
Newcastle hope to keep Bruno Guimaraes at the club and alongside Lewis Miley, Jacob Ramsey and Joelinton, the arrivals of Steur and Bamba will strengthen the club's midfield unit. One midfielder who could be leaving the club this summer is Joe Willock. The 26-year-old is in the last year of his contract at St James' Park and Turkish giants Besiktas are keen on his signature.
Whether Bamba fits straight into the side remains to be seen but Newcastle wanted a number six and now they have secured one. In him, Miley and Steur, they could have one of the best young midfield units coming through in European football.
