Oisin Murphy has defended his conduct at the Goodwood stewards inquiry, saying, “I do not believe I should have lied”.
The four-time champion jockey riding Hatteen came off second best to the Tom Marquand-ridden Infraad in the first race on Wednesday. The two were separated by a head.
But the stewards called an inquiry into interference on the run to the line after the winner edged to the left, slightly taking Murphy’s mount off his line. The hearing was broadcast on ITV when both jockeys gave evidence before the panel ruled that the interference was accidental and that Marquand had made every effort to correct his horse.
Murphy’s evidence and reaction
Murphy told the stewards: “My horse is running straight and Tom's horse is a bit more babyish. We never made contact.
“I didn't know Tom's horse had shifted until quite close to the line. I can't for any certainty say I would have won if Tom's horse hadn't shifted out.”
However Murphy’s evidence did not satisfy some punters with controversial podcast The Barstewards Enquiry labelling his testimony as “disgraceful”.
Their post said: “Whether it's the correct call or not, that was disgraceful from Oisin Murphy in the stewards, you argue a case for the people you are riding for, not go in there saying 'there is nothing to see here’.
Murphy responds directly
Responding directly, Murphy said: “With regards to my evidence in the stewards enquiry after Race 1 at Goodwood today. I felt my horse had every chance in the race.
“He went a head up about a furlong out. I believe Tom Marquand did everything he could to stay straight.
“I do not believe I should’ve lied in order to attempt to have the result called in my favour. I wouldn’t want it happening to me.”
